6 cups beef broth
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper, to taste
French bread, sliced and toasted
2 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
Instructions
Place sliced onions, butter, and sugar into the Crockpot.
Set to high and cook for 4 hours, stirring occasionally.
Add beef broth, dried thyme, salt, and pepper after 4 hours.
Stir and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours.
Ladle soup into ovenproof bowls.
Top each with sliced toasted French bread.
Sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese over the bread.
Place bowls under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbly.
Notes
Watch the soup under the broiler carefully to prevent burning the cheese.
Use low-sodium beef broth to control saltiness.
Can substitute with vegetable broth for a lighter flavor.
